The Big Reveal

The new name for the general cargo ship BBC Danube appeared today on the ship's bows and in very large type face. As per my October 15  post, the ship arrived in Halifax on October 9 and its name was painted over along with the "BBC Chartering" wording on the superstructure. This morning the new name began to appear as workers applied the lettering.

By late afternoon the work was nearly completed and workers were dismantling the staging from the port bow as others on shore operated a platform lift on the starboard bow. The ship is due to sail late this evening.

Meanwhile official on-line sources confirmed the new name to be Allied Brooklyn. Those sources also recored a change of ownership from Briese Schiffahrts GmbH + Co "Folmhusen" to Fedship II LLC with commercial management by Conbulk Ship Management Corp. The official date of change was October 17. Fedship (Federated Maritime LLC) appears to be based in Boca Raton, FL, but the ship remains registered in Antigua and Barbuda - at least for now.

I neglected to mention that the bow shield was also painted over too. It was the coat of arms of the  port of Leer, the German city in East Frisia that is home base of the Briese company.

The description of the symbol in heraldic terms is "In a blue shield is a silver (= white) initial "L" crowned by a rose flanked by two facetted, 6-point mullets (= stars), all of the same colour." The colours were reversed in the ship's shield - perhaps for better visibility.
