New for ZIM.

The latest addition to ZIM Integrated Shipping's Mediterranean  / North America service, the ZCA, is a chartered vessel, named for Britain's largest container port. The Felixstowe arrived today, October 7, from Valencia en route to New York and berthed at PSA Fairview Cove.

The Felixstowe is far from a new ship. Built by Samsung Shipbuilding & Heavy Industry Co Ltd in Geoje, South Korea in 2002, it was delivered to Seaspan, but named CSCL Felixstowe for a ten year charter to China Shipping Container Line. On  completion of that charter is was renamed Seaspan Felixstowe and carried that name for eleven years. In 2023 it was sold to Japanese owners Miki Kisen, although still under Seaspan management and renamed Felixstowe. It now seems to be on short term or spot charters.

The 39,941 gt, 50,970 dwt ship has a capacity of 4500 TEU nominally, but is rated at 4253 TEU, which is reduced to 2805 TEU at 14 tonnes each. It also has 400 reefer plugs.

The Port of Felixstowe, owned by Hutchinson Port Holdings, handles nearly half of Britain's containerized cargo, in the range of 4 million TEU per annum. It has 25m deep water alongside and can handle container ships of the 18,000 TEU size. Its terminals have a total of 29 ship to shore cranes which serve about 2,000 container and RoRo ships per year.
