Republic of Korean Navy visit

Two ships from the Republic of Korea Navy arrived in Halifax this morning (October 16). ROKS Hansando and ROKS Hwacheon tied up at HMC Dockyard.

ROKS Hansando ATH-91 was the first to arrive. Used as a training vessel for sailors and helicopter flyers, it was lanched in 2108 by Hyundai Heavy Industry and commissioned in 2021. It can accommodate up to 300 trainees, in addition to a crew of 121. (It is carrying 151 trainees on this trip according to sources.)

As the vessel passed Canada's Naval Memorial, HMCS Sackville, it fired off a volley of (blank) rounds in salute.

An hour later the Fast Combat Support vessel ROKS Hwacheon AOE-59 made its arrival (without the salute).

Hyundai Heavy Industries, Ulsan, launched the Cheonji class ship in 1997 and it was commissioned in 1998. The ship is also capable of emergency medical and humanitarian relief operations.

The ships were in Baltimore last week for an official ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the Mutual Defence Treaty between the Republic of Korea and the United States. A US Navy carrier strike group visited Korea last week too. They also conducted training exercises, and there were high level meetings which included representatives of Japan's Maritime Self Defense Force.
