To borrow (and paraphrase) the well known saying often associated with the US postal service (but not its official motto) - neither fog nor the threat of rain stayed Shipfax from is daily rounds of ship spotting this morning, June 18 - but it was not looking good at first.
Sounding its fog signal well into the harbour, the Danish frigate HDMS Vaedderen returned to Halifax from exercises offshore. It only emerged into clear territory when it neared Point Pleasant.
The ship departed Halifax June 9 in company with HMCS Montreal and a United States Navy submarine. At the time I mistakenly referred to the ship as an air-defence frigate. I have since been corrected by a knowledgeable reader and struck out the phrase "air-defence" from that post.
The ship was in the clear by the time it passed Bishop's landing with George's Island as a backdrop.
The ship is due to sail again this afternoon, but will be back in port for Fleet Week June 19 to 22.Not long afterwards there was a similar situation with the arriving container ship ONE Meishan. I was determined to get the ship underway this time, because on its first call here, May 28, I was only able to get a photo of it alongside Pier 41. Today wisps of fog were streaming around the ship as it passed through the Middle Ground. The incoming tide was bringing colder water into the harbour (and flooding out the perch for some resident cormorants and mallards.)
Another of ONE's "M" class ships on the Premier Alliance's EC3 service, this time the ship is eastbound. After sailing from Halifax May27 on its westbound leg, it called in New York, Savannah, Charleston, Norfolk, and New York again June 17.
The ONE Meishan was built in 2018 by Imabari Zosen, Mihara, and was originally named Meishan Bridge. A 152,068 gt, 146,648 dwt ship its capacity is 13,900 TEU with 800 reefer points. It was renamed in 2023. Owners K-Line joined the Ocean Network Express joint venture along with NYK Line and MOL in 2017. They have renamed and repainted ships, usually as they came up for regular five-year drydocking.
On sailing from Halifax tomorrow (June 19), ONE Meishan's ETA for Singapore is July 23 via the Cape of Good Hope.
