First timer

What I believe to be the first ship to call in Halifax flying the flag of Bangladesh arrived this morning, September 2. Banglar Agrajatra is a tanker operated by the state owned Bangladesh Shipping Corp.

Built in 2019 by Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding in Jingjiang, China, it is a 24,167 gt, 38,867 dwt vessel in the Mid Range 1 (MR1) size classification (35,000 to 44,999 dwt). Foreign flag product tankers calling in Halifax are usually MR2 class (45,000 to 54,999 dwt).

Bangladesh, located to the east of India on the Bay of Bengal, is better known for its shipbreaking, but it has had a small merchant fleet since 1972 (shortly after it became independant from Pakistan). The current fleet stands at about eight ships, three of which are product tankers. (This ship's name - roughly translated from Bengali, means Bengal Advance- the country name Bangladesh means land of Bengal).

Banglar Agrajutra tied up at Irving Oil's terminal in Woodside, to deliver refined product loaded in Amsterdam. If past patterns are any guide, it will likely unload some cargo here then proceed to Saint John to unload the rest.
