Another bulk carrier arrived for Canadian Food Inpection Agency (CFIA) inspection today (August 17). This time it was the Cyprus flag Navios Happiness requiring clearance before proceeding on to the port of Sept-Iles, QC to load iron ore. The ship was in port overnight, but inspection only took a few hours this morning and the ship was able to sail before noon as it was declared free of the invasive LDA moth.
When the ship's keel was laid by Daewoo Shipbuilding + Marine Engineering Co Ltd in Okpo, it was to be named Manas but was launched and delivered in 2009 as Navios Happiness. Owners Kleimar NV of Belgium had apparently ordered the ship before the company was sold to Navios Maritime Holdings Inc in 2007. (Navios, based in Piraeus, Greece, is traded on the NYSE and headed up by Angelika Frangou, chair of the board, CEO and holder of 29.5% of shares of the company. Navios specializes in iron ore and coal transport, particularly to China.)Recent travels for the ship include a trip from Asia via Suez and Port Said to Malta for bunkers and Algeciras, Spain August 3. A ballast voyage from Asia must cut into whatever profit the iron ore back haul will earn.
Thanks to prevailing winds and tidal stream in the harbour, the ship's position in number one anchorage meant that it was not possible to see the ship from the bow, (from land), so only the dreaded "going away" photo was possible.
