Celebrity Summit - delay departure

The cruise ship Celebrity Summit was about an hour late leaving Halifax this evening due to a medical emergency.

The pilot was orded for 1730 hrs ADT, but about 1830 hrs I noted that the ship was still secure alongside and there was an ambulance at the Pier 22 entrance with lights flashing.

Waterfront walkers waiting to see the ship depart.

The pilot boat Capt. E.T.Rogers was standing by at the Tall Ships Quay, and it got underway at 1845 hrs, with the ship letting go shortly after.

Once clear of the pier, the ship backed out into number one anchorage to turn outbound.

The Millenial class Celebrity Summit was completed in 2001 by Chantiers de l'Atlantique, St.Nazaire, France. A 90,490 gross tons ship with a capacity of 2,218 passengers (all berths), 2,158 (lower berths only), it carries 999 crew. The ship sailed from New York and is bound for St.John's NL and is due there August 10.

Celebrity Cruises ships are noted for their traditional good looks. Despite the usual array of "golf balls" (satellite domes) the lines are fair and the hull free of applied decor and the decks clear of water slides and giant TV screens.

Celebrity was founded in 1988 by Chandris, and has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Royal Caribbean since 1997. Celebrity ships still carry the Greek character "X" as a funnel mark. (X, pronounced "KAI" in Greek, but called "chi", is the first letter in the name Chandris when spelled in the greek alphabet.)
