Coming Soon - ERROR UPDATE

Shipfax usually reports on Halifax Harbour activities after they occur, since there is always a bit of unpredictability about ship movements. However is this case, it is a rare enough event that a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) may be warranted.

The Colombian navy's barque Gloria is due at the Halifax pilot station at 0700 hrs ADT August 13. That would put the ship in the lower harbour in about 45 minutes, and in the position of number three anchorage at about 0800 hrs. It will no doubt be under power, rather than under sail, but may have its crew arrayed on the yards. So far there are no docking orders, and the vessel will anchor north of George's Island.

It is spectacular looking when under sail as those of us who remember her 2009 Tall Ships visit can attest. See Update below.

Built by the Astilleros Celaya S.A. in Bilbao, Spain and commissioned in 1968 its design is based on the Blohm + Voss 1930s era sailing vessels such as the USCGC EagleGorch Foch and Sagres. Its sister vessels also built in the 1960s are the well known Mexican Cuauhtémoc, Venezuelan Simon Bolivar and Ecuadorian Guayas.

As flagship of the Colombian navy, the ship also participates in official courtesy calls as well as conducts training cruises with cadets.

Displacing 1300 tons, and measuring 64.7m x 10.6m, it can hoist 1400 square meters of sail. It is somewhat less impressive when under power and minimal sail. See Update below.

Update: The photos attached to this post were unfortunately not those of the GLORIA but of the SAGRES. I apologize for the careless error of misidentification.

The following image is the GLORIA, quietly at anchor August 14 with sails neatly furled. The cruise ship Coral Princess is in the background.

At anchor with most of the crew aloft, sending down some sails.

A few minutes after the first photo, it appears that a new sail is being bent on.

Thanks to readers for pointing out this error I welcome corrections.
