Another ship for a Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Asian Gypsy Moth inspection was in port briefly on Friday. After only a few hours it sailed for Come-by-Chance, NL. The tanker Genmar Elektra was partly loaded, and required an escort tug in bound and outbound.
Unlike most tankers these days, this one was built in Japan. It started life as Fantasy, built by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding in Tadotsu. Current owners General Maritime bought the ship in 2008. General Maritime is headquartered in New York, but this ship is managed through their Portuguese subsidiary.
At 57,683 gross tons and 106,5060 deadweight, it is similar in size to the 7500 TEU container ships that are now calling in Halifax.
